IPTV speed test: can your internet handle 4K?

Run it on the device you stream with. The test measures how fast data gets from our servers to your browser, then works out how many streams your connection can carry at once in each quality.

  • Latency
  • SD to 4K readiness

Pause other streams and downloads in the house first, then press start.

What the numbers mean

How much speed IPTV needs per stream

Every stream takes its own share of the connection. Add up the streams that might play at the same time, then leave about 20% spare for phones, laptops and game updates.

Guideline speeds for smooth playback. Live sport at 50–60 frames per second sits at the top of each range.

SD3 Mbps6 Mbps12 Mbps
HD 720p10 Mbps20 Mbps40 Mbps
Full HD 1080p15 Mbps30 Mbps60 Mbps
4K Ultra HD25 Mbps50 Mbps100 Mbps

With latency under about 60 ms, channels start quickly. Higher latency rarely causes buffering by itself, but you may wait a second or two longer when you change channel.

What to try before anything else

Use Ethernet where you can

A cable from the router to the TV or streaming box gets rid of Wi-Fi drop-outs. On a Firestick you'll need a USB Ethernet adapter.

Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi

If you can't run a cable, join the 5 GHz network and move the router out of the cabinet or from behind the TV.

Restart router and device

Unplug both for 30 seconds. Routers that have been on for weeks often get noticeably faster after a restart.

Test at your busy hour

Run the test around 8 p.m., when everyone in the house is online. A midday result will look better than what you get during a Sunday night game.

Lower one stream's quality

If two 4K streams don't fit, switch one TV to Full HD. Most players let you choose the stream quality.

QUESTIONS ABOUT INTERNET SPEED

Plan on about 10 Mbps for each HD stream, 15 Mbps for Full HD and 25 Mbps for 4K. Two 4K TVs watching at once need roughly 50 Mbps, plus some headroom for other devices.

The speed on your internet bill is a maximum. Distance from the router, walls, other devices and evening congestion all take a bite out of it. Run the test again on Ethernet, or next to the router, to see the difference.

A full run downloads up to about 40 MB, and less on slower lines. That's roughly half a minute of HD streaming.

The test runs in your browser, and the result isn't sent to us or saved anywhere.
