M3U vs Xtream Codes: Which IPTV Login Should You Use?
M3U links and Xtream Codes logins open the same channels in different ways. What each one is, which apps take which, and the one we'd use on a TV.
Key takeaways
- Xtream Codes is a login (server URL, username, password); M3U is a single playlist URL. Both give access to the same channels.
- Pick Xtream Codes when your app supports it: channels, TV guide, movies and series all load automatically and stay in sync.
- Pick M3U for apps that don't support Xtream Codes, such as VLC and some smart TV players, and add the EPG link separately.
- Most login errors come from a missing http://, a missing port number or a capital letter typed in lowercase.
The difference in one paragraph
Xtream Codes is an API: you give the app a server address, a username and a password, and the app asks the server for live channels, the TV guide, movies and series as separate lists. An M3U link is a text file hosted at a URL that lists every channel with its stream address. Both routes lead to the same streams; they just package the information differently.
Side-by-side comparison
| Xtream Codes | M3U playlist | |
|---|---|---|
| What you enter | Server URL, username, password | One long URL |
| TV guide (EPG) | Loads automatically | Usually needs a separate XMLTV link |
| Movies & series | Separate, organized sections | Often mixed into one long list, or missing |
| Updates | App refreshes lists from the server | App re-downloads the whole file |
| App support | TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro, GSE, OTTPlayer and most modern players | Almost every player, including VLC and Kodi's PVR client |
| Best for | Everyday viewing on TV devices | Apps without Xtream support, quick tests on a computer |
When to use Xtream Codes
If your app offers a choice, Xtream Codes is usually the better experience. Because the app requests each section separately, large libraries load faster, the guide lines up with the right channels without any matching work, and catch-up or series episodes appear in their own menus.
On a TV we'd use Xtream Codes every time. We only reach for the M3U link with VLC on a laptop, or a smart TV app that doesn't offer anything else.
- TiviMate: Add playlist → Xtream Codes.
- IPTV Smarters Pro: Login with Xtream Codes API.
- GSE Smart IPTV: Xtream Codes API in the playlist menu.
Step-by-step screens for each app are in our setup guides.
When to use an M3U link
M3U is the universal fallback. VLC on a computer, Kodi's PVR IPTV Simple Client and many built-in smart TV players only accept a playlist URL. It's also handy for a quick check: paste the link into VLC on a laptop and you'll know within seconds whether the login works.
The catch is the guide. An M3U file doesn't contain program information, so you'll paste a second link (XMLTV) into the app's EPG setting. Our explainer on EPGs shows where that setting lives in the popular apps.
Reading your login details
Your activation email lists both formats. The server URL looks like http://example-server.com:8080, with the port number after the colon. An M3U link usually ends in something like get.php?username=…&password=…&type=m3u_plus&output=ts. If an app has separate boxes for host and port, split the server URL at the colon.
Fixing the common login errors
- Copy, don't retype. Usernames and passwords are case-sensitive.
- Include http:// at the start of the server URL, and keep the port number.
- Remove any space that sneaks in before or after a pasted value.
- If the app says the account is expired, check the end date in your welcome email or ask us on WhatsApp.
- Still stuck? Try the same details in another app. If they work there, look at the first app's settings; your account is fine.

Frequently asked questions
No. Both point to the same channels and streams. The difference is how the app receives the channel list, guide and library.
Yes. They're two ways into the same account. Just keep within the number of screens your plan allows at the same time.
M3U files don't carry program data. Add the XMLTV (EPG) link from your activation email in the app's EPG settings, or switch to Xtream Codes if the app supports it.
